The main purpose of a power cable or an electric one is to transmit electric power. They provide connection and enable wired networks, computers, telephones and other electronic devices to work. There are different types of cables and wires which are used for specific purposes. Some of the commonly used electric cables are:
1. Coaxial Cable
This kind of cableis made of copper and iscovered with various insulating layers. These cables are easily available in different sizes, flexibility, performance, cost and power handling capacities. Usually they are used for connecting video equipment, components of a network, television networks and for home audio system. In case of bigger projects workers use a cable stand for supporting cable reels.
2. Ribbon Cable
These cables are also called flat tin cables or multi-wire planar cables. They are made up of several insulated wires that are parallel to each other. These wires are able to transmit multiple signals at one time. In this kind of cables, 4 to 12 wires are running parallel to each other.
3. Twisted Pair Cable
These cables have pairs of copper wires that are insulated and are also colour coded. The copper wires are twisted around one and other. These are available in different diameters ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 millimetre. There can be more of these pairs of twisted wires in one cable. If there are more pairs, resistance is higher in the cable. The main benefit of using this type of cables is they are easy to install and are also economical.
There are many other types of cables available as well but the above comprise of the primary categories, mostly found everywhere.
